Essex Gig Guide

We are pleased to confirm that after extensive conversations between UK Government, Music Venue Trust and LIVE (www.facebook.com/livemusicvenuesentertainment) Grassroots Music Venues operating in England under Tier 2 Restrictions will be permitted to sell alcohol at ticketed live events. The ticket for a live event occupies a similar legal exemption to that provided for the serving of a substantial meal.

Mark Davyd, CEO of Music Venue Trust, said: “Music Venue Trust alongside Live Music Industry Venues and Entertainment Group (LIVE) has worked hard with the government to make the case that the consumption of culture and the consumption of food should be treated equally. If music be the food of love play on!

"We are delighted that we have been listened to and that guidance has been issued that makes it clear that ticketed events at grassroots music venues can go ahead in Tier 2 with alcohol on sale. It makes a direct difference to the number of shows that can be delivered and is a significant step forward in the campaign to Revive Live Music and Reopen Every Venue Safely."

Phil Bowdery, chair of The Concert Promoters Association, added: “LIVE is delighted that the Government has listened to our calls to allow alcohol to be sold at live music venues under the new Tier 2 restrictions.

"This announcement is hugely important for our industry as stopping the sale of alcohol was going to mean that even if venues were technically able to open under Tier 2, they wouldn’t have been able to financially. There's still a long way to go for the live music industry to recover, and the new situation is extremely challenging for those in Tier 3, but we're grateful to all those involved, in the industry and in government, for securing this sensible step."

Legislation permitting the sale of alcohol at live events is able to read here: www.gov.uk/guidance/tier-2-high-alert?fbclid=IwAR0Go7ccLBBm_ZFm0Ap8NnexbfiwnwX8By6eocLCAj3b_cY3xn...

In a further exemption, performances at live events commencing prior to 10pm will be allowed to conclude after 11pm.

Essex Gig Guide

Many thanks to all of you that have been down to The Railway Hotel since we reopened in August.

It’s been strange opening the pub without the regular live music, but every night has still been fantastic. We’ve seen faces old and new, and it’s heartwarming to have you all back through our doors again. Thank You.

We’re now a month into things, so we thought we’d give you a bit of an update with lots of exciting news.

It’s been understandably difficult these past few months both emotionally and financially, but the team has been doing everything we can to still deliver that unique Railway experience we know you all love. The restoration work on the outside of the building is progressing at pace, and we’ve been making noticeable improvements to the inside too.

We’ve introduced a mobile-ordering app (Swifty App) for safer and faster table service, we’ve been expanding our award-winning #Vegan menu, and we’ve even been introducing new drinks ranges which have all gone down brilliantly.

As we look forward over the next few months, we’ll be introducing even more improvements and changes.

As of next week, the pub will be moving to the next phase of our reopening. This will mean that the pub will be open six days a week, open for the following hours:

TUES / WEDS / THURS: 18:00 - 23:00
FRI / SAT: 17:00 - 23:00
SUN: 13:00 - 19:00

These new hours reflect the confidence we have in our safety precautions and the trust we have in our customers adhering to and respecting our rules. We know that some other bars and pubs locally have just given up on the regulations, but our rules are staying firm as they are.
We will still be operating a strict reduced capacity of 80 persons for safety reasons (40 indoors, 40 out in the garden), social distancing measures are still in place, still over 18s only, and it will still be first-come, first-served.

With these extra days also comes some brilliant new themed nights throughout the week, with some show-stopping drinks deals, food offers, and COVID-compliant entertainment. We’ve never been more excited about the brilliant nights planned ahead. More on those nights soon!

As the pub will be open six days a week, so will our award-winning Kitchen. Since you’ve all been asking so much, yes, our kitchen will be open on Sundays for the first time in ages too. And yes, that means we’ll inevitably be doing our famous Vegan Sunday Lunch at some point too. All your favourites will be cooking every day we’re open; result!

Some other big news is that we’ve had a big refresh in our drinks selection. You will have already seen the recent introduction of Beavertown Brewery Neck Oil on draught and Gamma Ray, Brixton Brewery Reliance & Atlantic, ERDINGER Weissbräu, and a litany of new spirits and mixers - and well, we weren’t finished there!

As of this week, we’re introducing Adnams Dry Hopped craft lager, Heineken, and Sierra Nevada to our draught selection; some impressive and delicious beers all ready and waiting for you.

Many of you have been asking about the music, and when we can have bands on.

We’re aiming to have a night of live music every Thursday with a wide selection of great local live bands. You’ll understand that because of the current government guidance on social distancing, these nights are limited to a 40-person capacity only, and are strictly limited, ticketed, and seated affairs. No less enjoyable to have an intimate gig with some brilliant local musicians though! As ever, we’ll do what we can to publicise the gigs on Social Media and our website, but once the tickets are gone; they’re gone. Tickets are being sold exclusively online, and not at the venue. People are being ravenous with the few tickets available, so do keep your eye out for those. Dates of the upcoming gigs are on our social media and our website.

As for music throughout the week, we’ll be introducing some themed nights in which we’ll play whole evenings of specific bands, genres and eras. Such favourites as Jazz Wednesdays are set to return, albeit with records rather than bands (for now), and we have something ambitious and groundbreaking in the works too. As ever, we’ll advertise on social media and our website when those happen!

Financially speaking, we’ll let you do the mathematics on how tight it’s been these last few weeks where usually we cater to 300 people each night and currently our maximum capacity is 80. We’re not gonna lie, it’s been rough, and independent pubs like ours really really need the support of our wonderful customers more than ever if we’re to pull through this. We’ve already lost numerous amazing venues all over the country, and we’d hate for any more to be added to that list.

Again, thanks to those that have supported us through this so far. Please do continue to pop in and bring your friends and family with you, and if you can’t make it out, we’re still available six nights a week on Deliveroo and JustEat too!

See you all soon.
